Escape from 2011 Blizzard

Yep - that's what I said - escape from 2011 Blizzard.  On Sunday before the now past blizzard of 2011, I headed south to Austin.  I was going to get away before it hit and that's just what I did.  However, how was I suppose to know that the storm would dip as far south as I could drive in one long morning?  I did have a couple absolutely beautiful days and we drove with the convertible top down and it was bliss - I said bliss... not blizzard and that was exactly what you were getting here at home!

At the park - it was an awesome day!  Beautiful sunshine and no jackets!

This was just one of our rides in the Mini convertible

A beautiful sunset in Austin

Oh yeah - we got static hair
Little sis on big sister's bike!
Here's the big snow in Austin.
We bundled up!  Grrrr we are ready to go tackle that big bad weather outside!

So proud of her 8 inch snowman!
I got to spend a couple extra days because of this wonderful snow!
Well, we were a little sad because this wonderful snowman was gone by noon!
This one's for Drew!

My lovely dirty car after I got home!  Those
big trucks would swallow me up with their spray!  I'm lucky I got home!

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa

Christmas eve was delightful as we all got dressed up and went to church and then back home for Christmas eve presents, dinner and pictures.   After the kids were soundly asleep, the elves went to work.  They were having entirely too much fun!

We got the cookies and milk ready for Santa as well as food for the reindeer - you can't imagine how hard it was to save those two cookies from getting eaten earlier!!!!

Now the elves got to work!

Here is a video summary of our Christmas in VA complete with snow!

Christmas in Williamsburg!

Well, who wouldn't love to spend Christmas week in Williamsburg VA???  We did but it was a lot colder than we anticipated!  In spite of that, we still had a great time.  Then we headed to Hampton VA for Christmas eve services and the rest of our time there.

When we landed in Norfolk, we took a taxi to the kids house where we worked on decorating Christmas cookies before we headed to Williamsburg.

Then we packed it all up - I really should have taken a picture of the car - you would not have believed it!  Angela had been busy before we arrived and had cooked our meals and they were in the freezer.... we had bags (suitcases) for them, bags for us and I think there must have been bags for people we didn't even know in that car!  We were also packed in like sardines - 6 in all and two of them were in carseats and we only had the front seats and the middle seat because the back seats were stowed to make room for all of our stuff!!!!!!  When we arrived, we quickly asked for a downstairs condo - whew - they had one for us!  We would have never gotten it all upstairs!
Here is the view that greeted us as we arrived and the fife and drum that played for us!  It was awesome!
Fife and Drum were playing in the gazebo when we got there!  That was fun!

This gorgeous historic home was the original one on this plantation and it still stands with a cannon ball still stuck in the side of one of the fireplace chimneys! It is open for anyone to tour while staying there.

It was so nice to have our meals all planned out for us and all we had to do was pop them in the oven each night.
We promptly set up a place to work on that one million piece puzzle Angela brought with her and of course, she was addicted and could not stop putting it together!  I'm not sure she slept at night - I think she secretly got up and worked on it.
Here are a few pics from the condo life....

We made a trip to the Yankee candle shop where they had a room where it snows every 30 minutes;  it was cool and the kids loved it.  Got a few pics there too....

We stepped back in time and went to Colonial Williamsburg and saw the coolest Santa there.  Also walked down through the old town and nearly froze our toes off!  Angela couldn't wait to get back to our warm condo.
Angela also had crafts with her to keep the kids busy and also one night we all joined in to make hats for Christmas eve and Christmas day.  Everyone had to be creative and could not copy anyone else's ideas!  It was fun and here are a few pictures of that exciting event...  (you can see the finished products in the next post)

One of our really big events that week was our trip to Christmas Town at Busch Gardens.  It was a beautiful place to see at night!  I'm not sure how long it takes them to put up all of the lights but it is beautiful and pictures never really tell the story.  We took a ride on the train and we were having fun taking pictures of everyone and if you look closely, someone keeps popping up in the background! What a goof!

It was a great place to spend one of our evenings.  Luckily, we picked the warmest day to go!

Well, it came time to load our van back up with all our stuff (minus the food we ate!) and head to Hampton for Christmas eve and Christmas Day.  I will post pictures of that exciting time as well as the BIG snow they got that started on Christmas day evening.
